Blobby Volley GB
Welcome to Blobby Volley GB, a demake of the addictive PC volleyball game.
Now on Game Boy (DMG), Game Boy Color and Super Game Boy! Play as a jelly-like blob and compete in fast-paced volleyball matches — solo or against a friend.
Features
- Single Player: Play against the CPU in three difficulty levels!
- Two Player: Play against a friend using a Link Cable or a second controller on the Super Game Boy!
- Achievements: Unlock trophies by completing challenges!
Gameplay
Your goal is simple: hit the ball over the net and make it land on your opponent’s side to score points. The first player to reach the winning score (default: 15) wins the match.
Controls
- Control Pad: Move (Keyboard: WASD or Arrow Keys)
- A: Jump (Keyboard: J or Z)
- B: Navigate back (Keyboard: K or X)
- Start: Pause (Keyboard: Enter)
- Start + Select: Rage quit to the title screen (Keyboard: Enter + Shift)
Platforms
Blobby Volley GB is compatible with every version of Game Boy. The Game Boy Color version contains all versions of the game on a single, dual-compatible "DX" ROM. Multiplayer fully supports cross-play between all types of Game Boy systems. For example, a Game Boy (DMG) can be linked to a Game Boy Color using the exact same version of the game.

Great demake and I really love that you put the effort in to support the SGB. Just two questions regarding the SGB:
1) is there a reason why the custom frame is so bright and desaturated?
2) Me and my kid enjoy the two player mode a lot. Is there a chance that the game rules / point limit on SGB multiplayer will be adjustable in a future update?
Hello
1. No particular reason. It’s just a homage to the original Super Game Boy border.
2. Great idea. I will note it for a potential future update.
Thanks for the feedback :-)
Hello Supermetz
This is amazing work, I just purchased a copy as I know this would have taken some real effort to get working, I actually found your forum posts on the dev progress. I am interested in making something multiplayer also, but I see your sample projects are de listed. Would you be able to share one of these again I think it would really help.

Hello Nic
Sorry for the late reply. I think the original GBVM example does a better job of explaining how it works in general. You can find it here. The main problem is that exchanging data via the Link Cable is not difficult per se. The difficult part is integrating it into your gameplay, like deciding which information is crucial at what moment, accounting for timeouts and disconnects and for data corruption. My old example didn’t do any of that. It was just a different take on the original GBVM example. However, I do plan to publish a better example in the future.
Very neat :)
Very cool and nice made b^^
Cute game... and I love the music!
Something that would be cool is unlockable volleyballs. Just a reskin.
Whaaaat? This is amazing.
Really good stuff! I love the physics and the link cable feature (which I didn't try)
Here's a boxart and label I created with ChatGPT and Photoshop:

This is masterful stuff. Great job.
What a great game, soo well done!
what emulator can use for sgb to play with 2 players in same screen with 2 gamepads?
BGB supports multiple controllers. You need to enable "Super Gameboy" under System and configure "Joypad 0" and "Joypad 1" under Joypad. :-)
I'm a fan! Marvelous and delightful!
The physics on this are perfect. This is now my go to game for a quick pick up and play.
Amazing! Controls are so fluid that it makes it really fun. I will for sure come back later and complete more trophies.
I will also ask the Retro achievements.Org community to have a look at it and to give it some cool retro achievements + leaderboards.
Awesome game. Do you think you'll release the project files so we can see how you accomplished the link cable and SGB so well? 🙏🏻
I've been asked about this a lot since my first tech demo. I do plan to publish a sample project showing how to do it :-)
That's awesome! Thanks a lot 😊
That would be incredible if you could. Really help the community out! 👍🏻
Any updates on a simple example project? I did a 2p and 4p SGB level on my Jam game, and the player polling code was terrible for me, very clunky! Would love to see how you managed it!
Hi, I'm still working on it. But I'm waiting for the release of GB Studio 4.2, so it's on hold for the moment. I've also been busy with my life and started a new job. But it will happen eventually.
Awesome!!
I'm so glad this finally released. This is a piece of art since it's physically super close to the "original" from PC while aesthetically being a pure and well designed Game Boy game.
Also the fact that it runs on GB, GBC and the Super Game Boy is pretty neat, especially since it allows for a true "console-like" multiplayer experience on a Super Game Boy, allowing both blobs to be controlled with two SNES gamepads. Only very few games had this feature back then (Street Fighter II comes to mind). It also features link cable multiplayer which I've already tested with a friend. Such a fun game.
By the way if you can beat RED or at least score a few points against him, you're pretty deep into the physics of the game and might wanna join the official Blobby Volley Discord server:

this is fun lol but why red is so hard
oh man hes the cham
RED is intended to be a real challenge even for those who already know Blobby Volley. For this reason, I plan to port RED to Blobby Volley 2 in the near future :-)
Lol that sound cool, and I finally got 1 point one Red. What a challenge :D
